There are many ways to make your garden attractive to the birds. A safe place to feed and food they like is the easiest way. Garden bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. Natural sources of food are scarce in the winter so they can be really helpful to the birds.
Feeding stations, containing favorite foods, can be set up to attract different species. An example of a speciality bird feeder is a thistle bird feeder that holds the seeds that finches love. Tube feeders are very good to keep seeds dry and prevent it spilling out. You could also use a window bird feeder so that you can watch the birds from inside your home.
Speciality feeders can be bought to attract hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers. Put them close to your bird house in a safe place. Food in the bird feeder should be checked regularly to see that it is free from mold and dry. Clean up any spilled food daily to prevent it attracting wasps and ants and other pests.
Birds benefit most from feeding during the winter but food can be scarce in other seasons too. Shortages can occur at any time of year so put out food to help them whatever the season. Make sure you put out food suitable for fledglings in the breeding season.
Water can be provided in bird baths and water pans for bathing and drinking. They will love a safe place to bathe their feathers and preen. Water at different levels should be provided as some species like to bathe at ground level, others higher. Only fill containers to a few inches and place containers away from bird feeders as birds like quiet places to bathe and preen. Running water sounds will attract the birds. Place a water dripper on your bird bath to attract the birds.
A natural environment in a part of the garden will increase the birds sense of security. Leaving an area to grow naturally with wild flowers and trees will provide an attractive place for them.
