Many believe humanity hasn’t been as brave and revolutionary as it is now. Same sex marriages, cloning and the Internet itself are some of the things that have made people believe this generation is one of individuality, defiance and power. In the world of fashion, many designs thought to be outlandish before are slowly making their way into the mainstream. Indeed, the present day has become everything it never was before. But when you talk about an era that fought and won the biggest opposition to assert its true identity, it was undoubtedly that of the 1920’s. The “roaring twenties,” as it is called, was a time of liberation not just from World War I but more from social jadedness that people started to believe was beginning to cripple them. This was the time when the war had caused enough damage to people and properties and everyone was simply crying for freedom and life. By the time things had subsided, people came out with a burning desire to express themselves without restriction. The 1920s was marked by social and industrial change. Business practices were beginning to be more exploratory and experimental. Women made their voices notably louder during this time through their outright defiance of social customs. They started to smoke in public, which was considered taboo prior to this time. But their major contribution to the change of the times was made through fashion. Dresses were no longer restrictive and nauseating (due to extremely tight corsets they had to wear under those waist-hugging dresses). By this time, hemlines went up to the knees and hair was cut very short for the first time. Waistlines dropped, silk or rayon stockings became a staple of every female getup and make-up was bolder and darker. Designers became braver with their designs and started to think out of the box to create the new 1920’s clothing, among which, the flapper dresses were the most popular and are even making a comeback today. Indeed, the roaring twenties lived up to its title as it became more than a loud voice for women. Beyond that transformation, the times were marked by their rebellion against gender-based standards of judgment against their capabilities and rights as women. Around this time, they were allowed to use their right to suffrage and have since been more vocal about their political beliefs. As if to surrender to the inevitable rise of the female population, the men became more and more accepting of the women’s new emboldened position in society until there was equality between sexes. The roaring twenties was, indeed, a time of awakening, liberation and, most especially, empowerment for the women. From their bob hairstyles to their controversial votes, these gals sure contributed so much to what society is today.
