I have of late started buying much more wine online. As a rule there are 3 physical places I buy wines from in London: 1. My preferred option is Jeroboams Wine Merchant 2. Wimbledon Wine Cellar 3. Waitrose. The first I like because there is plenty of choice combined with the expertise and often a little taste of something that adds colour to the buying experience. The second, Wimbledon Wine Cellar, I like but I find I am often up-sold, leaving a little lighter in the pocket than I intended. The wine selection between Jeroboams and Wimbledon Wines is actually fairly on par. I notice that they both sell for Chocolate Block, Chateau Tracy etc. The reason I buy quite a few wines from Waitrose supermarket is partly out of convenience whilst buying food but also because I can pick up such good value wines for really very little.
When it comes to online I have enjoyed buying wines from Jeroboams but could not get to grips with the Wimbledon Wines site. Jeroboams have put a lot of effort into their site and it is easy to locate the wines that I need. It also seems good to me that there is such a broad selection. I was looking for some champagne for my daughters wedding and bought a magnum of Laytons Brut Champagne to sample. It was totally quality at a price that I used to buying single bottles of champagne for (I wont mention names as it is not a derogatory statement, just one noting value where value applies!).
Waitrose web site I found a little too cumbersome and mainstream. I also always feel a bit nervous about signing up to these great big mailing lists that try and hook me into every other promotion in the world. jeroboams has looked after me very well thus far online and I expect that the Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey Chambertin 2007 will titillate where it is intended to!
